Newborn Photography Session

Your Guide to Preparing for a Newborn Photography Session

Welcoming a new baby is one of life’s most magical moments, and capturing those first precious days in beautiful photographs takes a little planning. As a Perthshire-based newborn photographer, I’m here to walk you through everything you need to know to make your session stress‑free, comfortable and full of heart‑warming memories

1. Book Early—Aim for the First Two Weeks

Newborn sessions work best when your baby is between 5 and 14 days old. During this “sleepy window,” they’re more likely to curl up naturally and settle quickly. I recommend contacting me during pregnancy—ideally in your third trimester—to reserve your spot. If your little one has already arrived, get in touch as soon as possible, and I’ll do my best to accommodate you.

2. Keep Your Baby Comfortable and Calm

A warm, cosy environment helps your newborn stay serene and sleepy. I heat my studio to around 26–28°C (78–82°F) and use soft white noise, but at home, you can prepare by gently warming the room ahead of time. A calm feeding just before the session can also encourage contentment and longer naps.

3. What to Bring Along

Feeding essentials: Bottles, formula or expressed milk, breastfeeding supplies and burp cloths.

Extra nappies and wipes: Newborn sessions can be unpredictable—better to have spares.

Favourite comfort items: A special blanket or soft toy that soothes your baby.

Outfit changes: A simple onesie or wrap if you’d like variety.

Snacks and water: For parents to stay energised

4. Choosing Outfits and Props

Neutral, breathable fabrics work beautifully and keep the focus on your baby’s features. Soft creams, greys and pale pastels tend to photograph best. If you have special heirloom items—hats, blankets or family‑made wraps—bring them along. I also have a selection of delicate bonnets, ties and baskets if you’d like to include them.

5. Involve Siblings and Family

If you have older siblings, encourage them to wear simple, coordinating outfits (avoid bold patterns). Let them know in advance what to expect—short sessions, gentle photos together—and consider a small reward (stickers or a favourite snack) for their patience. Dad and grandparents are equally welcome for family portraits; these images become treasures for generations.

6. On the Day of the Session

Arrive about 10 minutes early to settle in and have a quick chat about poses or special requests.

Keep your baby awake for a short while before feeding them just before we begin; this helps them drift into that sleepy, snuggly state.

Trust the process—newborn sessions can take 2–3 hours with breaks for feeds and cuddles. Patience ensures the best results.

7. After the Session

I’ll edit and deliver your gallery within 2–3 weeks, providing a mix of colour and timeless black‑and‑white images. You’ll receive an online viewing gallery where you can share with friends and family, and order prints, albums or digital collections.
